“Lower than low, you know the expression of face only a mother could love. Well, here was a kid, only a mother could love, and she didn't. She didn't, or at least that she never hugged you. I think we were thirteen before she really hugged us for the first time, and that was in front of a neighbor. See, you weren't supposed to talk about anything that went inside the family.
