1. “51. For several years past and until its last session the General Assembly has begun its work in an international atmosphere of distrust, alarm and threats. The periodical outbreak of regional conflicts and of crises in international relations were a severe test for our Organisation and very often gave rise to increased scepticism as to its value and authority. It must be recognized, however, that whenever the Assembly has met, it has examined calmly the problems submitted to it and it has several times averted specific and imminent threats to international peace and security. 52. Thus it condemned and stopped the aggression against Egypt in October 1956 and prevented the outbreak of a general conflict in the Middle East at the time of the revolution in Iraq and the events in Lebanon.”
