  3. “The Great Lakes region has made progress with regard to peace, stability and development despite the challenges related to heinous criminal activities, including the illegal exploitation and trade of natural resources and the increase in conflict-related sexual violence against women and children being committed by the armed groups and negative forces actively operating in the region, especially in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. We have also witnessed the negative impact of the coronavirus disease and climate change on the livelihoods of our people in the region.”

I am also honoured to participate in this high-level briefing on the Great Lakes region, under theme “Supporting the renewed commitment of the Great Lakes countries in seeking sustainable solutions to the root causes and drivers of conflict”.”
