There must be investigations and persecutions. There must be a constant flow of information with the Court. When the Court determines that a case cannot be tried at the national level, domestic authorities are under an obligation to comply with the request of the Court. In that respect, we welcome the positive and constructive cooperation of the Libyan authorities with the Office of the Prosecutor. We believe that the activity of the Court can bring positive developments, particularly if the Council remains united and committed to supporting Libya and helps to ensure that justice is done in a fair and impartial manner. Allegations of new incidents involving the use of sarin keep emerging, as examined by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fact- finding Mission with regard to the incident in Ltamenah. It is one more reason why fighting impunity, identifying the perpetrators and holding them accountable must be shared priorities of the Council. 33. “Italy is deeply concerned about the findings of the report, as they again affirm that chemical weapons have been used in Syria. To date, the JIM. has verified four chemical attacks by the Syrian armed forces and two attacks by Da'esh. What happened in Khan Shaykhun in April 2017 and in Umm Hawsh in September 2016 is totally unacceptable and confirms the abysmal scale of human suffering in the Syrian conflict. We condemn it in the strongest terms. These episodes are a tragic reminder that international law, including the Council's resolutions, as well as the international non-proliferation architecture, continue to be blatantly violated in Syria by the Government and by the terrorists, further eroding - as emphasized by the Secretary-General in his latest report (S/2017/902) - the taboo against chemical weapons.”

We encourage them to redouble their efforts so as to ensure coordinated and harmonized answers to the questionnaire. Italy also aligns itself with the statement to be delivered by the observer of the European Union. Today, the Security Council unanimously renewed not only its support for the European Union-led peacekeeping force (EUFOR) Althea, but also its appeal to Bosnia and Herzegovina to speed up the pace of reforms, in line with European integration perspective. Italy firmly supports the European Union (EU) path chosen by Bosnia and Herzegovina and will continue to assist the country in achieving that goal.
