On the subject of peacekeeping operations and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), where Slovakia has its largest presence, we would also like to proudly announce that, for the first time, we have a Slovak female in the position of Force Commander of the contingency, making her the second woman to hold that position in the entire history of UNFICYP.   4. “The road to safety and equality for women has been slow and filled with too many detours and setbacks. We have seen some inspiring breakthroughs, which we applaud, but also too much backsliding, which we regret. Slovakia faces challenges of its own but spares no effort in implementing the women and peace and security agenda when it comes to empowering women at home and helping them abroad. The Slovak Government implemented its first women and peace and security national action plan for the period from 2021 to 2025. We feel encouraged by the recent increase in the representation of women in the military, which reached 22 per cent among new conscripts. The representation of women serving in the armed forces is now at about 15 per cent.”

On the other hand, we were horrified that only one day after signing the agreement, Russian missiles hit the port of Odesa, which can only be considered to be proof of the Russian Federation’s total disregard for international law.”

  10. “Mr. Grünwald (Slovakia): Over the more than 150 days since beginning the senseless war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and despite multiple calls by the international community addressed to the Russian Federation to immediately cease its hostilities, severe bombardments of cities and rockets flying over the heads of innocent civilians continue to be a horrific daily reality for the Ukrainian population. These attacks have resulted in a significant increase in civilian casualties — over 12,000 so far, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as a result of which over 5,000 have been killed and 7,000 wounded. Needless to say, the reality is much worse.”
