Just 22 years ago, I was listening to the United Nations meetings on the fate of our people and our nation, while I was seeking refuge in the mountains to avoid the shelling and the grenades of the Serbian army against all our people. Today, 22 years later, as the newly elected President of the Republic of Kosovo, I have the privilege of representing my people, all the people of Kosovo. The truth is that I am only able to sit among Council members today because of the determination, the perseverance and the liberation struggle of the people of Kosovo to see our country free from oppression and from genocidal rule, to see our country independent and sovereign.”
