I had just graduated from Columbia School of Journalism, in Masters in Journalism, and I'd done my thesis on public schools in central Harlem, in the Central Harlem School District. I went to one of the best schools in the district and one of the worst schools in the district and just sat there for like six weeks and tried to absorb what was going on. And no one had ever done that. I had to get special permission from the Board of Education in Brooklyn back when they still had that to do that.”
