“That's a very good question. I would like to think it will be the most successful band that came out of the UK. So I'm going to have to go Beatles. Actually, one direction, were they more successful? I'm going to stick with the Beatles because of Liverpool. Liverpool.”

“Boy bands, I was West Life Backstreet Boys. Then it became one direction. So it's just that trajectory of boy bands. I was a big Justin Bieber fan back in the day as well. I was a Belieber.”

“I have legitimate concerns about what a Nigel Farage government would do to trade unionists, to working class communities, to minority communities, to LGBT people. And what I've seen in government is Nigel Farage and his colleagues. Like I said, vote against trade union rights, vote against anything that would actually help our working class communities. So yes, he's a danger.”

“Well, I think the way that him and his colleagues have behaved in Parliament, where they have voted against trade union rights, where they are committed to peddle racism, to attack our rights, I do think he has all the features of a fascist politician. And I think it's important that we stop a fascist reform government. When someone attacks trade union rights, when they are not supportive of minority communities, where they are trying to get us out of the ECHR so they can get away with anything and there is no state accountability, we can see what's happening across Europe and that is a dissent into fascism.”

“I think Nigel Farage has proven that he is not on the side of working class people and that reform is just another wing of the establishment and what we will see them if they enter government, which I'm committed to stop, is more privatization, more deregulation, more tax cuts for the super wealthy, and more austerity for the rest of the country.”

“I'm in politics because of a desire to change people's lives for the better, and that means winning state power. That means actually running government. That means nationalizing, that means building council homes, that means providing people with the good, secure jobs that they deserve, all of those things mean winning power. And that's what I'm committed to. But that will take building a party, organizing, knocking on millions of doors and articulating our politics.”

“The vision we are the party of the left, and we have to build, and we're starting from very humble beginnings, but this isn't a three, four-year project. This is a 10, 20, 30, 40 year project. Fascinating.”

“I mean, the Labour Party probably should have worried about that before it enabled genocide and passed through austerity. And the Labour Party actually was quite content because it thought the left had nowhere else to go. And now the left has choices and it's about the Labour Party. Investing in our communities, ending all forms of austerity and privatization, actually rebuilding the country and making people's lives materially better.”

“I tried in the Labour Party, I was told that the Labour Party is a broad church and people disagree with each other, but Keir Starmer told the left, if you don't like it, leave. So that's what I did because that Labour Party has become unrecognizable to me, which is, you know, like I said, pushing through austerity, enabling genocide. That is not a Labour Party that I can associate myself with. And so I felt a sense of responsibility to listen to the voices in our trade unions, in our social movements, in our communities who are looking for better representation. I don't think it's okay to just settle for the Labour Party and just say, this is the best we've got.”

“Anti-Semitism is a real issue, and we've seen that with the attack on the synagogue in Manchester. We see it from the hate crimes and the abuse in our communities, in our society. And we must all speak up, challenge that and root that out of society. But we cannot conflate the Jews. We cannot conflate anti Zionism with anti Semitism because not all Jewish people are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jewish people. You will have Christian Zionists. You will have atheist Zionists. So to conflate a religious... With Zionism is actually quite offensive.”

“Because what should That piece of land is a democratic state, one state, with equal rights for all, where there is no racial or religious supremacy. Israel would cease to democratic state with equal rights for all, and that should be the democratic position, because the two-state solution does not exist, it is dead, it is a complete utter fallacy. And instead, you have apartheid in the West Bank and genocide in Gaza, and you have millions of Palestinians who have the right to return under international law. So what we need to be advocating for, in my opinion, is a one-state solution, equal rights for everyone, no racial or religious supremacy.”

So, just to go back on the NACBA, the NACBA isn't just a historical event, it is an ongoing process where land, Palestinian land in the West Bank continues to be stolen, where illegal Israeli settlements continue to grow, where Palestinians do not have the right to be able to travel, all of these things continue to happen. Evictions, the violence in the West Bank, the fact that it is a series of banter stands, there it cannot be a coherent Palestinian state. I think those are important things to also acknowledge. And I think what is actually distressing for a politician, a British politician is knowing that we have the ability to stop it. “That's the fight against fascism. And like I said, the current threats that we face are to do with pandemics, climate crisis, and that's what we need to be investing in. But on the point of NATO, NATO literally has working groups where BAE, Lockheed, Martin all sit on them. They are literally investing in their profits by being involved in NATO and NATO has a track record. If you look at Libya, if you look at Afghanistan, these wars have not made us as a country more safe. They've made us less safe. And I don't think the British public, like the idea of endless war, of militarization on steroids and not addressing our NHS.”

“Vladimir Putin. But the crises Like what we've had in the past, they are more likely I'm going to get to that point, they are more likely to be related to the climate crisis. They are more likely to be pandemics. They are more likely to be economic crises. They are not likely to be military invasions. That's just the reality that we're facing. And so rather than putting billions of pounds into defense spending, we should be investing in what I think is real security for our communities, especially in Coventry as well, around housing, around insecure jobs, around our public services.”

“Well, what's going on? It's a crisis of neoliberalism. People were told from the 80s onwards we have to privatize our national industries, we have to embrace neoliberal politics of deregulation. We have to do all of these things and people's lives will get better because there'll be a trickle down economics that will be happening. That has not proven to be true. People at the very top are incredibly wealthy and the people at the bottom are paying the price. And in terms of my own journey, I said I grew up under the shadows of the war on terror. I also saw austerity and I saw the response to the 2008 financial crisis which were in class families paid for and working class communities. And just going back to what is happening and why people feel angry, they've been told that the reason why they are poorer and they are materially poorer. The reason why their public services aren't working, the reason why they can't get a council house.”

“It depends on what you define as working class. So if you look at working class as someone who has to work to earn an income to be able to live, then yes. If you look at my background, you know, there isn't having wealth that is intergenerational or through assets. It's through income. And many people see that as working class, you know, there'll be things that are in my life that are deeply cultural, right? Like being able to be able to go to the theater and some of those things that you might see as culturally middle class. But if it's related to having to work to be able to pay the bills because there isn't money coming from property or dividends or companies or inheritance, then yes.”

And I was both and I still am both, but it was this binary, the Muslims, us as a British country, and it was this inability to have anyone provide a narrative that there are communities who identify as British Muslim rather than what was being propagated by politicians and the media to divide us.”

It was this, well, we are fighting the terrorists abroad, but also we have vast suspicion of communities here in the UK, and that was from the prevent strategy, that was from the cameras that were spying on Muslim communities, that was from the racism, the things politicians were saying, the front pages on the news. So it was a systemic effort”
