IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Next Wednesday, the trial continues of the Ulm five, including the Irish citizen, Daniel Tatlow-Devally. A delegation of TDs and Senators, including me, will attend the trial in Stuttgart next week.

This man said of one woman that he would attach her to a concrete block. He said of another that he would set fire to her. Should this person be getting a pay off from the Army? No, of course, he should not. He should have been put on trial.

I have very little time left, but I want to put on record that the woman in question was abused by an Army officer using military equipment and surveillance technology, which is extremely scary. She made a complaint, which has never been pursued.

When is the victims of crime Act 2017 going to apply the Army? The Women of Honour have pushed for change so that if there is abuse within the Army there will, we hope, be mechanisms to deal with that, but what about women who are abused by Army personnel who are not in the Army?

This officer was involved in a GoFundMe campaign, where rapists' names were used as a joke by the various men who contributed to it. I do not think rape is funny and the Army should not either. That GoFundMe campaign was left up for a long time. Why is the Army a law unto itself in relation to gender-based violence?

The victim's belief is that the military prosecutor has evidence of a very dangerous man but for some reason, the Army does not seem to be concerned because it has not prosecuted him on those charges. Why would the Army not want to prosecute somebody? Are we at war or something? Why is it so secretive?

  1. They can deny it all they like but the only people suffering will be ordinary people throughout the country, especially the people in rural areas they claim to represent.

  2. I was alerted in my constituency to the situation of the Hope schools, to which the Department of Education sent a memo indicating they would not be compensated for the red alert days, meaning they had to tell students to come into school. Is there a difference between the safety needs of students with additional needs and other students? This is the message that was sent to those schools. It is absolutely vital that the Government answers for what has happened. It must invest to ensure it does not happen again. Events like this storm are going to be a feature of life, notwithstanding the claims of climate deniers who have roles in the Government, particularly in the key Department of agriculture. This will keep happening.

  3. The compensation for the people who have been suffering for two weeks must come from the vast profits of the ESB, not from increased prices for customers, as has been talked about in the media. We need investment to ensure it does not happen again that people, in 2025, are waiting weeks upon weeks to have their power restored. I raise the situation of schools. In many areas, children, particularly those with additional needs, have been suffering through not being able to attend school due to a lack of electricity and water. Every school should be issued with a generator to ensure this does not happen in future. I refer in particular to special needs students.

  4. -----partly in an attempt to prostrate itself in front of Trump and the corporations and to ignore the ongoing suffering of the people of Palestine. What was a very right-wing Government will become more right-wing, including with the motley crew of those who espouse some of the ideas of misogyny, racism and climate denial as well. They are becoming more right-wing and more clearly pro-capitalist. We need a left that is more left, more anti-capitalist and puts up a challenge and an alternative. Socialists in this Dáil will demand the resources we need for the housing crisis, disability, autism and care and will organise outside of the Dáil as well. We need a movement to challenge the direction that capitalism is taking now.

  5. Today we nominate a Taoiseach in a week that Donald Trump was inaugurated, surrounded by his broligarchy, his billionaires and his sexual predators. He announced that the US intends to continue to destroy the planet for profit, pick on minorities and move in a more competitive and genocidal direction. Beside him, the world's richest man did two fascist salutes for good measure. What was being announced was the end of a liberal era for capitalism and politics. That will resonate in this Dáil as well. Already, the Government has announced that it will drop the occupied territories Bill-----
