I don't think my grandfather was a slave. He was in Franklin, Louisiana and ended up being a kind of a money manager. The story is that there was he handled the banking for a couple of Masonic lodges and a burial society and he had about $4 million, four to five million dollars in the bank in Franklin, Louisiana before 1900. I know he was a postmaster during Reconstruction. And his house was right beside the railroad track. And he was responsible for taking the mail off the railroad tracks. And seeing that it got to the post office and got distributed. And he was a businessman.”

  8. “I can go back to 1860, maybe 1840 is where some of my relatives ended up in Louisiana and they came from Baltimore to New Orleans on a boat. Don't know whether they were slaves or not or how they got there or what they did or how they ended up owning property. But Du Bois said there were 26 black millionaires in Louisiana before the Civil War. And a lot of the slaves that came made money and earned their freedom doing that iron work that you see in the French quarter.”
