  1. He would say that because he's a wonderful man. But it was terribly unfair what they did to him, and they were always trying to do Oppo. Dumps on him. I mean, it got so bad in this campaign.

  2. David, here's the bottom line. If my husband is in the dictionary for what the Republican Party believes in, his first job out of college was in a steel mill. He has created great wealth and thousands of jobs in a free market system where he's been smart and worked hard and succeeded beyond anybody's wildest dreams. Now if he were married to a Republican woman senator, he would be perfect because he was married to me. He was a tax cheating son of a bitch. You know, I mean, he was like, you know, a bad guy. And that's one of the hardest things about my campaigns is how rough they were on him now. In the grand scheme of things, I'm blessed. We have a great family. We're close.

  3. It is a parable of modern campaigns. We shouldn't have called it an RV tour or we should have said, we're going to do an RV tour, but she's going to add on one stop at no expense to her campaign or taxpayers so that she can see veterans in St. Joe.

  4. He wasn't going anywhere. He wasn't going anywhere and answering questions. But that's not the point. The point is that we should have published with the press release the schedule because then it would have been obvious that I added on a stop for veterans. I want to do a veterans stop up in St. Joe and I couldn't make it with the original schedule. So I said, well, I'll just take the plane up to St. Joe and then meet you guys in Columbia and we'll finish up. We were on the RV for the vast majority of the time. I mean, probably seven-eighths of the time we were on the RV. But the fact, and by the way, anybody who saw where I was, and it was all, everybody knew the press knew where I was, you could tell I couldn't have driven it. It wasn't like we hit it. You couldn't get from Columbia to St. Joe in the time that we had.

  5. And they wanted to chip away at that And so, you know, I don't think you are flying around and looking down your nose at people if you do 50 town halls. My opponent hadn't been in probably even half the counties in the state. Josh Hall.

  6. Well, yeah, it was just kind of, you know, but it, I can't really complain because I've done this a long time and I know sometimes the smallest things get blown out of proportion. And they were looking for a way to make me not of Missouri. Well, see, this is where I.

  7. But I would say in my state there's a lot of Pain in small manufacturing because of the input costs. Of steel and aluminum because of the carriage. Because of the tar

  8. No. I had a lot of the farmers in the boot hill just kind of say to me, hey, can you help out this guy's been coming up here to work my farm for a number of years and now it's gotten a lot harder. I can't get enough of the visas that we need for the workforce. And so, you know, but. The majority of the people, particularly in rural America, I think, were willing to buy into this notion that somehow Trump was going to bring back manufacturing in a way that would replicate the 50s and 60s and 70s and that

  9. Except in some agricultural communities. There are certainly a lot of work that come in on a seasonal basis. I know that's true in my state, especially in the boot here.

  10. So, you know, it's not as if they're solving this problem of advanced technology requiring fewer people to do manufacturing and soon many jobs in the service industry, driving a cab. So it is, I think it is an issue for our time. And it's one that the president kind of did a fast one, he did a bait and switch. He convinced everyone that this had to do with Mexicans. And of course, that's ludicrous.

  11. I agree. And I think what Trump did that I really can't stand is that he peddled the fact that the problem was the Mexicans and the Muslims instead of the microchip. I mean, the microchip has a lot to do with this. Even under the tax cut they passed, I mean, a lot of the money that these corporations are realizing is going for new equipment. Well, you know what that new equipment's doing? It's causing them to need less people.

  12. So, you know, people may get upset that I'm saying this and say this is a false equivalency. But I know these people that voted for Donald Trump. And some of them I don't care much for and don't like much, but a whole bunch of them I get. And I hate it When people in Washington, especially people from bright blue states, just said, Well, the only people voting for Trump are stupid people. No, that's not true. That's just not true.

  13. Change that much for a lot of these folks, and they really, and I think Trump got that. I mean, I don't think he gets a lot, but I think he gets marketing, and I think he tapped that vein of frustration and anger. And if somebody is frustrated and angry that they don't think the world is giving them a fair shot based on their hard work, you need to listen to that and understand it and not look down your nose at it and call them names and say they're all racist or they're all this or they're all that because it's just not true. I'm not saying there aren't some bad apples in the crowd, but there are in every crowd. There are in some of the crowds that support Democrats.

  14. Listen, my state did not re-elect me, but I will fight anyone who wants to look down their nose at the people of my state, who voted for Donald Trump. You know, I get it. There's an angst and a frustration about whether or not people are playing by the rules, working as hard as they know how. They're not really getting ahead. They can't afford to retire. They can't afford to send their kids to college. And, you know, everybody who runs for president says they're going to change things. Our friend

  15. So at the very get go, I hand the basket of questions to somebody who can't stand me. And that kind of helps take the edge off. So we really, I mean, there was some, you know, there were people that said, why aren't you voting to impeach him at most of the town halls? And then there were a lot of people that said, why aren't you supporting him? Why are you fighting him?

  16. We didn't have anybody boo at the opening gun at these town halls. And yeah, there were some very strong Trump supporters there, and they were in my face, but with Midwest politeness, I never felt like any of them were out of control. And, you know, I think that there is untapped in this country is the recognition that if you show up and you legitimately open the doors to anybody who wants to come in and you legitimately answer any question they want to ask you, there's a certain goodwill that springs from that that kind of takes some of the edges off. They could see, I mean, one of the things I do in my town halls is I ask right at the front. Who is positive they will never vote for me under any circumstances

  17. Well, you know, I've done town halls all through my time in the Senate. And when most of my colleagues were hiding under their desk after we passed the ACA, I said, nope, nope, we're going out there. Now, I will tell you it was not as bad as the town halls during the ACA. Yeah. I mean. The town hall I'll never forget is when we had a terrific young minister do a prayer at one of the town halls after the ACA. He got booed in the prayer. So, you know, when the prayer is hardcore, when the prayer is booed, you know it's going to go downhill fast. You know how to read the crowd. It's like, okay, buckle in. This will be a hot one.

  18. I think that's one of the things these presidential candidates are going to have to deal with. Honestly, being of Washington to many voters is just right at the very starting gun as a disqualifier

  19. Correct. Correct. I mean, I really went after it in hearings. And so, you know, I think it did make me a better senator the time I spent as a senator.

  20. I think I was. I think I was a much better senator. I think I learned a lot from my colleagues in those years. I think I learned on how to be effective in terms of using the committee process to do effective oversight. That was kind of my main deal. I did a lot of oversight, a lot of contracts.

  21. I do think that the fact I've been around so long was a big problem. You know, I make the joke in my stump and in town halls that, you know, can you imagine if they're wheeling you into the operating room and the nurse leans down and goes, I got really good news for you. This surgeon has never done this operation before. You'd go, oh, oh, back the gurney up, back the gurney up. But in politics now, having absolutely no political resume is much better than having a long one. And it is something I think we've got to kind of come to grips with. I was a better senator because I was a prosecutor. I was a much better senator because I'd been an auditor. But all of that experience in the eyes of voters added up, well, you know, she's been there long enough. She hasn't solved anything.

  22. Was the ambivalence something that people sensed? Once I get into something, I'm pretty intense and I worked really hard at the campaign. You don't do 50 town halls in one year. If you're just warming up, I mean, 50 town halls in one year is a lot. So I was really in it. I was trying as hard as I could. I will say that, you know,

2019-02-25 · The Axe Files with David Axelrod · Ep. 311 - Claire McCaskill · IDENTIFIED FROM THE TRANSCRIPT · source

  23. Well, almost 20. It's just short of 20. And, you know, so it was like nobody really wanted to step right up and go, oh yeah, I want to run it as a Democratic candidate in a state that Trump won by 20. So I really felt like I had to.

  24. I think people tire of their elected officials. When Trump won, I really felt that I couldn't walk off. I just couldn't walk off. There really wasn't anybody. I tried to talk to others that would have been, you know, Jason Candor would have been a great candidate, but no one was willing after what happened in Missouri in 2016.

  25. Yeah, right. And so I was struggling with whether I was going to run again. Now, you know, Schumer didn't want to hear it. Oh, you're running, you're running, and everybody, oh, you're running, you're running. But I really seriously, my husband and I had long conversations about whether or not it was a good idea if I ran again.

  26. And I didn't ever want to get to the point that I was mailing it in. I really wanted to be in a situation where every day I was just after it, after it, after it. And I was feeling tired of the grind. The schedule is just brutal in the Senate. I'm not complaining I was blessed to be there. But the facts are the facts. You've got to get on a plane and fly. I flew southwest every Monday morning. I flew home Thursday nights. I had to work most weekends. I have a large family. I have almost 12 grandchildren now. 11 and 12 will be here any minute.

  27. Yeah, I think so. And I was getting to the point that I wasn't sure that I was going to have the, I have a lot of energy in a job.

  28. Yeah, I was really. All the jobs I've had, two terms has been the maximum I've ever done. Now, I don't know if this is a character flaw or if this is a good thing, but I have a tendency to want to move on.
