“Things internally, we have to closely monitor technology. When we play around ChatGPT early last year, we said, wow, that's huge, right? More like 1995, internet was born, everyone realized, wow, that's a huge potential. You have to embrace that. That's one thing. Another thing is every day we spend a lot of time. I also personally spend a lot of time on talking with our customers prospect. Guess what? You know, first question. They always ask me now is, what's your AI strategy? You know, what do you do to embrace AI? Are there any other features you are working on with the AI powered? That's the reason why we understand, wow, this is the AI era, not only ourselves, but also our customers. We all ask about our AI strategy.”

“First of all, I have a dedicated AI team led by our CTO, and we hired from other companies. Other team is just similar, right? We have R&D team still focus on the incremental innovation, introduce new services. We also have sales team, I have a marketing team, IT team, a lot of team. I think you look at AI evolution. First of all, everyone is looking at how to leverage the AI to make your products better. And also at the same time, how to leverage the AI to improve your entire business workflow, right? How to make so every AI is writing the marketing materials team level the AIS managers, right? They can leverage the AI to monitor sort of help rep, when they talk with the customers after the Zoom meeting is over, how to leverage AI to tell the sales managers, hey, this is a very productive and sales session, right? And also can help the sales managers to generate.”

“So structure wise is similar to before, but more efficient. We already started investing in the Gen AI even before Chatty GPT was born, you know, last year, right? So a lot of other companies did something similar. However, given the chat GPT was born, last year we realized, wow, we have to triple down on that, right? If today look at the number of GPUs we had compared to two years ago, way more. Look at our AI engineers, you know, just every day, just to focus on AI technology, the foundation AI technology, and also essentially our AI platform team. Look at a number of her engineers way more than we had two years ago.”

“Know you can have more product managers, designers, engineers, the understanding AI era, understand the vision pro, the question, the three world, right? How to make sure you learn the new technology and then apply that to the product, even new skills, right? And if you do not make your company more efficient, where do you get the budget to help? That's the reason why every quarter we look at our positions, right? Make sure how to shift some of the budget towards new technology like AI.”

“First of all, you know, given the public company a very disciplined, right? You just cannot just invest in more RD. How to make your company more efficient, right? That's the reason why we look at all the positions, right? How to make the company more efficient with that, we can shift some of the budget towards some new technology, you know, like AI. Almost every company today that are trying to save money because you invest more, you buy more GPUs and you hire more AI engineers.”

“Plus, if you are not, we don't want to meet in person, send a digital variant for myself, you will have exactly the same conversation. I think that's the vision we painted a few years ago. But how to get there? I think there are two things. First of all, luckily, I think we already started. I mean, look at it in industry, technology-wise, I think already is going to help us to start that one is AI another AR. The Vision Pro, the Quest 3 is just started. Look at today all the GN AI. I think also started. I do not think all those technologies are ready yet, but it will help us get there.”

“First of all, even a few years ago, and when we talk about vision at Zoom Topia, which is our user commerce, so imagine a world where you and I, let's say whenever you and I have a call down the road, right? And I feel like you and I are sitting together. And I shake your hands, you feel my hand is shaking. I give you a hug. You feel my, you know, the intimate as well. And plus even two people speak a different language. the real-time translation, you know, also work extremely well.”

“To start with, probably was, but for sure, down the rule, for sure, experience would be immersive, right? You know, like a vision. Sure, Donna Jordan, that's a 3D word of yourself, can mimic yourself very well. So you even cannot know it's a real person or just a 3D world.”

“I think a few years, and we'll get it there, but just at the beginning. The reason why is the two problems, the one problem today is look at language model itself, I think just started a lot of the potential opportunity not there yet. Another thing is we have to make sure you have customized word. Essentially, every human being, you have to have your own word of based on all the data, based on all the context around you, all the trained ARM. So you have your ARM. I have my RM. I might have multiple variants of ARM. You know, like sometimes I know I'm not a good at negotiation. Sometimes I do not join a sales course with the customers, right? So, I know my vicinity is, you know. Before sending a digital tweet for myself, I know that weakness, I can modify the parameter a little bit.”

“But that's the reason why the limitation of today's RLM, everyone shares the same LRM doesn't make any sense. I think I have own, I should have my own word of LRM. Needless ARM. All of us will have our own worry of ARM. Essentially, that's a foundation for the digital twin. Then I can count on my digital twin. You know, sometimes I want to join. I join. I do not want to join. I can send a digital twin of myself join. That's the future.”

“Think another AI avatar essentially just the AI version for myself, right? Essentially, in order only just to listen to the call also can interact with a participant in a meaningful way. Let's say whenever there's a decision, the team waiting for the CO to make a decision or maybe some meaningful conversation. My digital twin sort of really can represent me, right? And also can be part of a decision making process. We're not there yet.”

“You know, and often the meetings, all the summary, everything you send to those people who cannot make it. Essentially, sometimes I cannot make a better decision. Again, I can leverage the AI, you know, as my assistant, right? And it gives me all kinds of input. More than myself, right? So that's kind of the vision.”

“Which ones would you have shared with the problem first, right? And last but not least, after the meeting is over, let's say I'm very busy, I missed the meeting. I really want to understand what had happened. That's one thing. Another thing for a very important meeting I missed given I'm the CEO, probably they got to postpone the meeting. The reason why I probably need to make a decision. Given that I'm not there, we cannot move forward. meaning they have to reschedule. You look at all those problems. Let's say assume AI is there. AI can understand my entire calendar and standard context. Whenever I say you want to have a meeting, just one click within a five second AI already scattered a meeting. And at the same time, if every morning I wake up, AI will tell me, Eric, you have five meetings scheduled today. You do not need to join in four out of five. You only join one. You can send a digital version of yourself, join those meetings. And for that meeting, for one meeting, I joined.”

“I think multiple things. First of all, I can tell you I hate my calendar every morning when I look at my calendar. Oh my God. Are so many things, right? Even before I start, I know actually today, maybe nine or ten meetings in between, I need to check emails, really messy, make a phone call. First of all, I'm not happy already when I look at that. Second thing, How do I get here? Because most of the time, my edit, you know, she had been scheduled on meetings. I occasionally also scatter something like Canada as well. Again, every time, either myself or my admin, when you schedule a meeting, it's not just 30 seconds work. You need to coordinate that do so many things. That's the second thing, how we got here. The third thing is you look at all those meetings which meeting you have to join. Which meeting you are optional. You also do not.”

“Mission to chat a message, a phone call, emails, whiteboard, the coding, creator task, a manager task, right? Project management, all those kind of things together with AI help, with new applications, that's the direction. That's part of our workplace, it's sort of like a two-doctoral journey.”

“Think of two things. First of all, we are way more than just video conferencing in Venice. We have a lot of other new capabilities. And essentially that's an entire workplace platform. It's collaboration platform. That's one thing. But you look at it with just a video conference itself. I think more and more we can leverage the AI. You do not need to spend so much time. You do not have five or six Zoom calls every day. You can leverage the AI to do that. However, you and I can have more time, more in-person interactions. But may not be for work. You know, maybe for something else, you know, why do we need to work five days a week? You know, Donald, four days or three days, why not spend more time with family? Why not focus on some more creative things, right? More like give back to your time, you give back to the community and society to help others. Today, the reason why we cannot do that.”

“I think maybe 90% of the work, but in terms of solver. Today, you and I are talking online, right? So I can send my digital word and you can send your digital wording. Again, like in-person meeting, if I stop by in your office, let's say nearly I give you a hug. You know, you shake my hands, right? I think AI cannot replace that, right? We still need to have in-person interaction, right? That is very important. And like, you know, you and I are sitting together in a local Starbucks coffee and a very intimate conversation. AI cannot do that either.”

“Anism will leave off you to me. We are not there yet. Yeah, this is a huge vision, right? A lot of what you do in the workplace is busy work or status check-ins or non-decision oriented conversations. And you can automate that in some way or send a version of yourself to quickly communicate whatever you need to communicate. You can go through your email in an automated way. This is a big dream. I've heard this dream kind of a lot. I'm wondering, I want to talk about how you get there and how you're building Zoom to get there. But just at a very foundational level, what work is left, do you think, for the average person if the AI is doing all of that stuff? I think for now, the number and thing is AI is not there yet, you know, and still will take some time. Let's assume fast forward, you know, five or six years later, right? So AI is ready, right? AI probably can help.”

“And I can read most of the emails. So, I won't be one or two emails. You know, will tell me Arab is harder for the digital version to reply. And can you do that? Again, today all of us will spend a lot of time, either make a phone calls, join the meetings, join the emails, deleted some spam emails and reply some text messages, right? It's still very busy, how to leverage AI, how to leverage the Zoom workplace and to fully automate those kind of the work. That's something that is very important for us. We have a big audience of product managers and engineers and designers. And I think what you're saying is they're going to send AI avatars to their stand-ups every morning. More than that. It's not only for meetings, even for my emails, right? I hate, truly hate reading every emails every morning, right? And I do less my, you know, AI version for myself, read most of the emails.”

“In the beginning, it was very simple, right? Video conferencing is very hard. Ded Expensive connections, and Zoom is going to be as simple as. Simple. So we're conferencing again. This is one app, you know. So you look at your calendar, right? It's not only to do your Jordan video meeting, but also a lot of other things, right? You read the email, send a china message, make a phone call, have wire border sessions, schedule something with accidental third parties. And what we are doing now is really look at your entire schedule, how to make sure every Zoom workplace to help you out. Essentially, you can live within the Zoom workplace. And the Zoom workplace can help you get most of work done, right? That's our pitch, right? We are not there yet. Because today for this session, ideally, I do not need to join. I can send a digital version for myself to join, right? So I can go to the beach, right? Or I do not need to, you know, check my emails, the digital twinner for myself.”

“And then you're And kind of take More of what happens in an office. You're so right. That's probably the same for almost every enterprise so far as a service company. Remember they all offer our service, right? As you mentioned, but however, give me the AI error. Everyone is thinking about how to leverage the AI and model more to make everything fully automated, right? To reduce the manual work, reduce the human involvement, right? Still can get it worked done. And that's probably the same for almost everyone now. When you think about”

“I think for now we are embarking on a two-doctoral journey. You are right on looking back at 1.0, you know, more like to build some applications, video conferencing is one of them. Our slogan was meet happy, right? Now you look at a 2.0. It's different. It's work happy with Zoom AI company. Everything's really about workplace entire collaboration platform as well as AI. I've heard”

“Something he calls a digital twin, essentially a deep fake avatar of yourself that can go to Zoom meetings on your behalf and even make decisions for you while you spend your time on more important things like family. I'll just warn you, I try to ask a bunch of the usual decoder questions during this conversation, but once we got to digital twins going to Zoom meetings for people, I had a lot of follow-ups. How many digital twins might you have? How will they all stay in sync? Can you trust them? What work will be left if everyone is sending their digital twins to all the meetings? Eric was more than game to talk about all of them. With me, and this became a very Different kind of interview on decoder. I haven't stopped thinking about it since we recorded it. I think you're going to like it. Okay, Eric Jon, founder and CEO. Here”

“Welcome to Decoder. I'm Neil Lapatel, editor in chief of the Verge, and Decoder is my show about big ideas and other problems. Today I'm talking with Zoom CEO Eric Jan. And let me tell you, this conversation is nothing like what I expected. Eric started Zoom after working at Cisco. He realized there was an opportunity to make video conferencing simpler and easier to use. He was right. Zoom is now a household name, especially after usage exploded during the pandemic. But usage has since come down and Zoom faces a number of business challenges that Eric and I talked about. But it turns out that Eric wants Zoom to be much more than just a video chat platform. The company has ambitions to take on Microsoft and Google and enterprise software by making docs and email and other productivity tools like chat. And like every other company, Zoom now has a big investment in AI. But it's Eric's vision for what AI will do that are pretty wild. See, Eric really wants you to stop having to attend Zoom meetings yourself. You'll hear him describe how he thinks one of the big benefits of AI at work will be letting us all create”
