I wanted to head back west and I applied for clerkships on the Ninth Circuit, which is the federal court of appeals that covers the far western states and got a clerkship with Judge Mary Schroeder. Her chambers are actually in Phoenix. And I remember so distinctly loading everything I owned. It fit into this kind of two-door hatchback, five on the floor, Honda Accord. It was my first car driving across the country, getting to Phoenix late on an August afternoon. You could see the heat waves coming up from the valley. But it's dry heat, right? Oh, it's dry heat. “So, my dad was, as you said, the son of Italian immigrants. And he was raised in California. My mother came from Hardy Midwestern stock and was raised in St. Louis.
