  2. “By that time, my family was not as well to do as it had been when I was born. It was a very, very difficult time in the 90s. And one of the reasons why I had to leave Nigeria. But that was what I thought I would end up doing. And when I started at an FE college, I was going to college part-time and I told them I wanted to be a doctor and they looked at me and said, why don't you want to be a nurse? Why are you stretching yourself like this? You could be a perfectly good nurse and things will be fine. And that was my first interaction with what I call the poverty of low expectations.”

  3. “That was something my dad wanted me to. My dad wanted me to be like him. He was a doctor. And of course, I was going to be a doctor. And I said, I want to be a plastic surgeon. He said, no, no, you're going to be a gynecologist or an obstetrician because that's what girl doctors do and that's what would be good.   4. “But no, I do think about it a lot because my sister was born just after. My brother and I were born two years apart. My sister was born just after that cut off. So she doesn't have British citizenship. She's never wanted it. She comes here, you know, on holiday and so on. So it is something that has really and profoundly impacted my view of what citizenship is. We have a lot of people who are dual citizens and who the phrase citizens of nowhere comes into mind. I think that you need to be committed to a place. And I left Nigeria and I came here and this was home. And even though I had family back there, this is the place that I'm from. If there is a war, which army would I fight in? The British army. This is the country that I would sacrifice my life for, not the other one. And I think a lot of your citizens don't necessarily”

  7. “So, this is an interesting thing. I often see there's a very unpleasant sort of ethno-nationalist, anti-Kemi wing, and they call me an anchor baby. And I read these things, and you realize that a lot of people don't know what the immigration rules back were back then. They don't understand what the Commonwealth was. They don't realize that you didn't need to have a child here to have citizenship and so on. The Commonwealth was open. There was free travel. You could go back and forth. You didn't need visas. This is how the Windrush scandal happened, of course. There were people who could live here. They didn't need any papers. And the rules changed. They never sorted themselves out. A lot of people think that we have American immigration rules. There's no such thing as an anchor baby. It doesn't make sense.”

  8. “So I see British by faith in the sense that we didn't know that I was even a British citizen until I was about 14. And my mother had an obstetric referral. I was born into a well-to-do family and they could afford to do that. This is the oil boom in Nigeria. Lots of the rich African prince's era. And so my mother came here, went to a private hospital, dealt with the obstetric issue. I was born. And a couple of weeks later, she went back. As it happened, her brother lived here. So we did have some family here and some links here. But the idea of living in the UK and moving to the UK was not really something that was at the forefront. Just to be clear.”
