  11. “Freddie Gray was a young man in the city of Baltimore who died in police custody. His death, much like some of the things that are happening today, set off frustration. This was after Ferguson. Baltimore was the next one. It was at the beginnings of the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition to some peaceful protesting, we had some real violence break out in Baltimore City. And in the first few hours, 400 businesses and homes were destroyed and burned and 127 police and firefighters were injured. It was really out of control. And I, as a governor, had to make the decision to come in to help keep Baltimore safe and send in police officers and the Maryland National Guard. But we did so in a way that we allowed the protest to go on for a week and we just backed up the city police who were beleaguered and overwhelmed.”
