“I told him not to run that nobody could beat Eisenhower. It was going to be impossible task for a Democrat to win, but he felt loyalty to the Democratic Party. He felt loyalty to the country. He didn't agree with a number of Eisenhower's policies. Particularly he didn't agree with the Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. And so he ran. Before he ran, it was very interesting. One day, London Johnson, then the majority leader of the Senate, had a heart attack. President Eisenhower also had a heart attack. Adley was to give a speech at the University of Texas, and Bill Blair usually traveled with him was sick and I went with him, and then we were invited to spend the night at LBJ's Ranch. And we drove in a car from Austin to the ranch with Sam Rayburn.”

“No, we had a funny experience one day with the Chief Justice. Part of our job often was driving him home at the end of the day. He lived at what was then the Wardman Park Hotel. And one day my current partner, Howard Trinus and I were driving him, and he was very quiet, which was unusual. Usually we had a very congenial conversation. I said, something the matter, Chief? He said, a guy came to me today, offered me the job of baseball commissioner, and chief was a baseball fanatic. He had been a semi pro baseball player. I didn't say anything, Howard didn't say anything. He says $75,000 a year. At that time, the chief made $25,000. Says, besides, he says, You can go to the ballgame every day. Power than say anything.
