Know it was until I had a few years of continuous sobriety after I left Congress and I was writing my book that I began to connect some dots and get some perspective. The single greatest characteristic of people suffering from a substance use disorder or mental illness is the lack of insight. So the ability for me to actually have had that conversation with you two decades ago would have been nil because I wouldn't have ever been able to really take a perspective and think about what it was like because I was in the middle of it.”
