“Mr President, dear Commissioner, population ageing, a shrinking working population and labour shortages are the most pressing demographic challenges now in Europe. The shrinking birth rate depends on the decision of the young population. But there is another aspect that is reducing our population and workforce that we can better affect. This is the high number of premature deaths in the EU. Every year in the EU, 1.3 million persons aged less than 75 years die per year from non-communicable diseases that are treatable and preventable. Four hundred thousand of them could have been avoided with effective preventive strategies and with healthcare systems offering timely treatment and effective care.”

“This is one of the direst humanitarian disasters in this century, and the EU must work to end the violence and meet the humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, including those who seek refuge. Finally, we must also look to our priorities. The EUR 4.2 billion that is needed to meet the immediate humanitarian needs in Sudan is just a fraction of the USD 2.4 trillion annual global military expenditure. “Amnesty International has called for the arms embargo to be extended to the whole country, and we need to confront the fact that the military‑industrial complex is benefiting from the violence in Sudan, just like they have profited from the genocide in Gaza. We should also recall that the peaceful revolution in Sudan only a few short years ago, where the civilian Forces of Freedom and Change alliance were not supported by the international community and were forced to share power with the military, saw democracy being snuffed out before it could truly begin. A return to the politics of power has created a situation of unimaginable suffering in Sudan. We must ask ourselves why the democratic revolution was not supported.”
“– A Uachtaráin, Commissioner, 30.4 million people in Sudan – that's half the population of the country – currently need humanitarian support, and 14.8 million have been displaced. The civilian population, as we have heard, are facing extreme violence, deprivation and famine conditions, and the sexual violence faced by Sudanese women must end. The impact of this war on children is also particularly shameful. Children as young as eight have been raped, and almost 4 million children suffer from acute malnutrition. Over 2 million babies born during the past 20 months are at risk from the decimated healthcare system and the crisis levels of hunger.”

Samtidigt har World Food Programme konstaterat svält i Darfur och mer än 25 miljoner människor lider av akut hungersnöd. Ändå har krisen i Sudan inte fått samma uppmärksamhet i media som andra kriser. Det är verkligen en bortglömd kris, men det gör den inte mindre verklig. Now, the European Union's development policy is heading in that direction. We have a geopolitical direction for the disbursement of aid and development aid, and that is becoming a central policy of the European Union. So we might sneer at President Trump for what he's doing, but we should also acknowledge that the ideological direction of European development policy right now is not very far distant from what President Trump has been doing. And the Commissioner is right: we should be haunted by what's happening, we should be outraged. In August, a famine was declared. That should have been a game changer.”

We mobilised logistics support, air bridges and sea freight to deliver critical aid. Of course, Sudan's suffering has got lost in the shadows, hidden from the world's gaze. We simply cannot allow that to continue. We will therefore continue to advocate for Sudan, continue to organise events and push for increased humanitarian access. “Their stated commitment should be demonstrated through concrete actions, including the implementation of the ODIHR recommendations, the investigations, also, of electoral irregularities, the prosecution of those responsible for violence against peaceful demonstrators, and a genuine commitment and action on the necessary pro-European reforms. I also note that you, honourable Members, and a number of Member States, have suggested that the authorities should address the calls for new elections, while the current measures taken by the European Union address the undemocratic actions of the authorities. Ir ko Europos Sąjunga nepadarė, kad štai dabar tokia yra situacija Sakartvele, kur mes tiek daug dėjome vilčių, kad dešimt bus šalių kandidačių, stojančių į Europos Sąjungą. Štai dabar Gruzijos klausimas yra įšalęs ir komplikuotas visais požiūriais. Todėl iš tiesų raginčiau Komisiją žymiai aktyviau įsijungti į Sakartvelo problematikos sprendimą.”

“His shameful decision to leave the Paris Climate Agreement and withdraw from WHO creates a lot of challenges to our efforts to address issues of climate change and global pandemics. His previous statements about taking over Greenland and Panama are completely unacceptable in all respects. A shift towards protectionism, including tariffs, could damage EU trade ties, especially given that the EU is one of America's largest trading partners. Our answer should be clear: in front of those, European Union should stay united, more socially oriented and stronger. 2-0300-0000”
“Mr President, dear Commissioner, 16 times in his inauguration speech, Trump used the word 'great', but not one word about the EU or Ukraine. Well, if he says it enough, it must be true, right? I don't think all this greatness will actually make the US stronger, but it might leave the EU weaker. Trump's plan to overhaul US trade policies to benefit America's economy – or rather oligarchs – could disrupt EU trade relations, as it was during his first presidency. His rejection of initiatives like the Green Deal on climate change will create frictions with the EU, which is committed to green energy and climate actions. Trump's emphasis on US supremacy could reduce multilateral cooperation, something the European Union relies on heavily.”
