“We have religious freedoms another place where the president has kind of been very, very good for whatever reason. It's kind of surprising to me, but there's a lot of good things he's done.”

“To protect American interests in the world. And then on foreign policy, again, we haven't had a major crisis to deal with, but this unilateralism or go-it-aloneism, I think is really dangerous. Our friends no longer believe that they can trust the United States, and our enemies, in many cases, feel emboldened by this approach that is, I think it defies the bilateral, multilateral, or bipartisan kind of consensus on foreign policy that has by and large kept America safe.”

“I can list the things that I think are helpful, that have helped propel a little faster economic growth and rising income for Americans, which is great. So the tax cuts, the regulatory changes, the judiciary over the long run, all those things are very positive. He's put good people in areas of government that I admire. Scott Gottlieb, who just left the FDA, there's some solid people that are doing serious work where I think the president, it's work in progress would be on the trade issues that actually you parachuted in from Mars, you would think that was probably a liberal advocating protectionism because that historically has been the case. We'll see how that plays out. I'm not as confident that the world order can be shaken up by one person negotiating with another, that there needs to be some norms established to be able to”

“We have tons of big issues that we need to fulfill to fix before we continue to rise up again as a nation. So my point was it's not, this is not the time to play these foolish games. And President Trump obviously had a different view of that and he was successful because people were deeply angry or anxious or worried about the future and they wanted the big horse irrespective of his views on anything to come and drain the swamp. Fast forward, you know, swamp's actually now probably knee-high rather than ankle high and not much has changed in Washington. It may actually be worse.”

“Yeah, my words were taken out of context. I basically said, I'm not going to play the game of the food fight. People are hurting.”

“Yeah, and I don't know. I mean, it was a really strange election in that regard. And again, I give President Trump all the credit of winning in a primary that no one expected him to win. But now he's president. And we hope there'd be something different.”

“Yeah, yeah, I mean, here's a talented guy, very focused on policy, good, solid, conservative, charismatic in some ways, felt like he had to play that game, and it looked...”

“Yeah, the editor comes there, got to get Bush's response. So she comes and says, do you hear what Trump called you? And I said, no. And I said, well, I can't tell it. I can't tell you what he said. Well, how can I respond if you can't tell me? We went back and forth. The press corps is laughing. She finally says, okay, okay, he called you blank. And I said, well, that's great and walked away. And the only way I would have been news that day was to say, no, I'm not that. He's that. That's not why people should run for president. And so I just was, you know, I was a fish out of water in that game. And I think other candidates that tried to play that game looked really foolish.”

“my campaign. I'm in front of 250 people town hall meetings, spilling my guts, hugging people, crying with them, laughing with them. It's really a phenomenal experience. And 30 minutes away, President Trump is having one of his raucous rallies of 3,000 people. And he calls me a, I can't say it, but it starts with A and ends in whole. And he said it three or four times.”

“Yeah, or no, I think that's right. You don't disparage people and you're weak and you're low energy. Can I tell you a quick story about this? Yeah, sure. This really described”

“You know, I was so focused on my own. It didn't bother me that much. But the idea that I'm in pretty good shape, I work out every day. I'm like, as governor, I work my tail off. As a candidate, I worked hard too. It seemed weird to me, seemed foreign to what I knew to be true. But this branding thing, you know, branding people is kind of a new idea. It didn't exist per se 10 years ago. Now we're all branded. We're all a brand. We're like toothpaste. We're people.”

“In retrospect, there's nothing I would have done differently if I felt like that he was going to be the nominee when he went down the stairs in Trump Tower as a kind of an orthodox from the get-go as an unorthodox campaign. He broke the norms and to his credit he won. I mean, I give him credit politically for this. My prayer, because I do pray for every president, I prayed for your friend in our president, Barack Obama, every day, and I pray for President Trump every day because it's so important to have a president that focus on all Americans. My prayer is that he wakes up some day soon and realizes he's president of the United States. He's not running for office. He has to lead for all of us. We're living in perilous times. We've not seen the peril play out right in front of us, but there are 15 different things that could happen that where you'd want a president that really focused on what it is to be president.”

“I'll be honest, I didn't, I don't know if he did, but to his credit, I don't think anybody took him seriously, but he tapped into a deep-seated anxiety that a lot of people in this country feel still do today.”

“It would, and there are millions of people that are really disgusted with our politics right now, and maybe they can be persuaded that there's a better way, a better path forward.”

“Then you lose I think I might be the poster child for that, but you can't. You have a life afterwards, and I think you have to look yourself in the mirror. You have to be true to your family and to your beliefs. If you want to be in a position to lead in a campaign, if you invalidate everything that you believe in order to win, you're really not going to be a very good leader. You're not going to have the trust with the American people, I don't think, to lead. And so you can be president, but are you going to be able to solve the problems that you believe are really important? Can you draw people towards your cause if people don't believe it's an act? So I think genuineness, particularly in 2020, maybe it'll actually be more important. I would hope that it also, the virtue of civility might actually be a benefit politically. There's no evidence of that right now, but”

“It's wild. I mean, there are things that you, most of my campaigning with Town Hall meetings. And so God, I mean, you quickly see that everybody, you know, your five-point plan is not really relevant for someone who's got a child that has cancer or who has student loans up the yin-yang. I mean, there are so many things you learn along the way that give you humility if you're really serious about leading. It's the right way to campaign. In 16 in the Republican primary, it was basically irrelevant.”

“She was worried for me, and I do think the dynasty thing was not helpful because look, you think about it, we have 330 million people. There are capable people outside the world of Clinton and Bush. So for whatever reason, I didn't prevail. I gave it my all. I was honored to be able to be in a position to run. I learned a lot. I wish I had won, but I didn't, and you move on. I'm out of therapy and back to my normal life.”

“Well, in retrospect, it made a lot of sense. At the moment, I felt it was like a little out of line since I was watching it live on TV, and she decided to do it. I went and told her, I said, mom, come on, give me a break. I'm thinking about running. Let me think about this. And she's okay, I promise I won't say it again. And then like two weeks later, C-SPAN starts advertising the show about First Ladies, and they have her saying the same thing. I say, Mom, you promised. And she goes, I didn't say it and hung up on me. Then she called me back five minutes later. Oh, yeah, I remember. That was prior. I taped that.”

“Has been. One guy did it. Yep, I admit But do we want that again? I mean, do we want a campaign about things that aren't relevant in the lives of people? Do we want a campaign that basically validates the 16 election as the norm, the new normal? I hope not.”

“Connect by being genuine first and foremost. You've got to be who you are. It's so easy to know when you're forced to be something you're not. It comes across so easy. People watch this stuff with their peripheral vision. Even then they know when someone's overreaching trying to be something they're not. So that's the first step. It's hard because you've got to break out, but you can't break out with crazy stuff because then...”

“Yeah, I mean, it's d ⁇ j ⁇ vu all over again. Now the Democrats are, there's no barrier of entry really to run for president, and there are lots of reasons why people do it apparently. So they'll have as many people as we did, which makes it, if you're a political junkie, I guess it's kind of fun to watch.”
