“While it's hanging over Washington, that's all they can think about. I would like to see the Senate restore some of its earlier luster, thinking with the great giants in the Senate in the past. And with truly bipartisan, Democrat and Republican, let them investigate. I think that maybe you bring the House in too. But Watergate was a lot, the investigation there was driven by the House of Representatives and by the committees. So I think they're capable if they could get off this circus of partisanship and polarization, which they seem addicted to tragically.”

“A little bit, but I wouldn't overemphasize that. Nixon was presided at the time of the Vietnam War, Watergate with the plumbers, with the enemies list. In the many years that he'd been in power, and also the buildup, his campaign against Helen Gagan Douglas, the McCarthyism that took place a little earlier, I think it was a different period. But I've seen the press trying to make that analogy, but I think we are in a different period.”

“My father lived here for eight years. The only time I was allowed to leave the seminary during the almost four years that I was there was to come to my father's inauguration in 1959 and we came right here. And then, of course, while I went off to law school, I did study for the bar here. Lived up on the third floor and had a chance to see the political conversations that took place here.”

“It's a beautiful home. It represents a lot of the tradition of California. And interestingly enough, the first governor to come here with his family, with his daughters, was the former mayor of Oakland, John Mr. Pardee. And so that's why it's interesting. Also, the second owner of this house was Lincoln Stefans. A great muck raking journalist. And besides that, I guess the most prominent person to live here was Earl Warren with his children. He lived here 10 years. So it has a lot of history. And for some reason, the governors wanted to live in a more suburban kind of house, and yet it's right by the capital. It has kind of suggestions of the White House, even though it's a gingerbread Victorian house, but it does represent the tradition. And for me, I studied for the bar here.”
