  1. Yes, that's right. Yeah, he did. And I think you got it. You hired him, I think. He did a great job. Derek Martin, Leah Kennett, Beth O'Connell, Sean Cherry, Chris Basil, Robert Betts, Joel Rabbit, Zach Kahn, Shannon Thompson, Jill Pendergast, Marika Ball Domberg, Nishat Kirwa, Evan Lang, Clay Vickers, Kayla Littman, Nell Plotkin, Katie Springer, Peter Kafka, Lauren Good, Walt Mosberg, Marty Moe, Jim Bankoff, Eric Anderson, and of course Eric Johnson. Most of all, Eric Johnson, thank you all to those people, and I really appreciate it. As always, you can follow me on Twitter at Kara Swisher one more time. 2. Let's wrap up the show. All right. Thank you everyone for listening and rating and reviewing the show and for all your support over these last five years. Thank you to all our guests, especially ones today that asked all those wonderful questions. And Eric, again, thank you for putting it together. You picked out just the right clips. You found just the right people. fantastic job. A lot of people have worked on this show directly or indirectly. I'm not going to be able to list them all and if I miss anyone, I'm so sorry. But here's a partial list of people I'd like to thank. Noah Colwyn, who I did the first shows with. He was an intern at All Things Digital and he worked on it right away. He was a retode.

  3. Yeah. Also, just so everybody knows, as a gift to Eric, he is getting the red chair. I have a red chair that I bought from Steele Case where a lot of people have sat in, I think including Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and many others. And I'm going to give it to Eric because he really deserves the red chair. And since I'm moving on from that part of the red chair, I think he deserves one of his own. So this is my promise to him if I try to take it back because it's a hell of a chair. As soon as I sit down and down and down and d

  4. Eric, you have been amazing. Let me just say, Eric, you are so critical to this being as good as it is. And I just, people don't think about the behind the scenes. I get a lot of the attention, but just like there's a crew, there's a crew here. And you're the critical member of the crew. You can pick any Star Trek person you want that you want to be, but you really have really added to this in a way that's really significant and profound and important. And so this is your show as much as mine.

  5. Con, con you know, although I kind of like him too. Even their villains are fantastic and interesting. So I just think you have to think about it in a really positive way while you're pushing up against the dark parts of it. And so I am going to. About it that way

  6. Star Wars is a very dark vision of the future, even though in the end they sort of won. They didn't. They didn't, did they? It was really dark. You know what I mean? It just was not so sure they were going to hold on to their victory, but it was always, their victory was always out of their grasp. And even though he got rid of that Death Star the next week, another one was back. You know what I mean? It just was constant. And the forces of darkness really do have a real power for a lot of people. And so you can have a Star Wars point of view, or you can have a Star Trek point of view, which is a very leaning forward into the future kind of attitude of the goodness that it does. And listen, they have lots of adventures and they're always running into some Klingon or someone, you know, who's the guy that was always given Kirk trouble, the one.

And she has had a lot of influence on a lot of politicians, a lot of people. Great book. It's not a hard read, but it's not an easy read. And I think it's worthwhile to do so. Shashana, I'm going to keep talking. That's what I'm going to do. I'm like a dog with a bone on this one. And I really do. One of the things that as I'm thinking about writing this new book about my life in Silicon Valley, I really do think about how much I loved it, how much I had so much promise, how exciting and magical and wonderful the idea of connecting everyone on the planet is. 10. They really do believe this, that there's a very good chance this is a video game from the future or something. I mean, that's the stupid version of it. But I don't think we can take this is not the matrix where there's a reality and we're jacked into it. It's that it doesn't exist. I think that's the concept of it, that it's not here. And so it's not like they're taking our energy and plug us in and put us in pods. It's that we don't exist at all. And so no, this is the same teen thinking, let me see what I can do to make Donald Trump do something to drive them just crazy and see what they'll do. So no, you can't get it. She's just a hell of a profile, so good at everything she does. Taffy, if you're in the simulation, it means you're fictional and you're being played by a teen from the future is determining your fate. And so you don't exist. I didn't say just, listen, I didn't just tell you tech bros do it. Elon Musk said it on stage in one of our interviews. He talked about it when someone asked him about simulation. I really trolled him on Twitter for a long time and I wasn't wearing my glasses at a party and this little tiny dynamo came running up to me. I couldn't see them because they were blurry and was like, you, you, you, you're funny. And I was like, oh my God, it's the mooch in real life. And he's just, he's like a cartoon character in that regard. He's just like what he seems like. You know, Mooch, let me tell you something. I don't recall the last time anyone got you to shut up. So I just feel like the right wing is like nobody lets us talk. And I'm like, yeah, they do. You just say a lot of things that break rules. I mean, I just feel like the people who never shut up are the people that say they can't talk. And I don't think they're being, I don't think, I think there's no proof of that. 16. Yeah just not too long'cause I know a lot of businesses depend on it for one. I understand that. I would immediately suspend all political advertising until the election is over. There's elections happening all the time, but the US president, I'd shut it down, shut down political advertising, and I would restrict political content much more so than Marcus. And I would really police it quite heavily. And I would make it all transparent. I think, you know, I know this is not as easy as a broadcast network. I know there's all kinds of messaging, but this micro, this micro-targeting and stuff like that, I think what Twitter did was the correct. And some of what Googled did was correct. So I would do a lot more of what Google and Twitter did. I would have a frank discussion with the world. I would sit for an interview with Kara Swisher is what I would do. Yes, no, you know what I mean? I would sit with someone who's really going to like, and I would.

  18. I think that if it's Vice President Elizabeth Warren, that'll be a problem. If it's any Elizabeth Warren anywhere near also Kamala Vice President Kamala Harris, I think a lot of people, Nancy Pelosi is on board with this, Joe Biden's not as well educated as he should be on this, but he will be. And I do think there's a lot of Republicans also sort of lined up. So I think there's going to be a lot more regulatory scrutiny. I think there'll be fines. I think there'll be all kinds of ways, maybe making the FTC more robust, maybe making the Justice Department honest again after kicking Bill Barr out. If it's the Trump administration, I think the tech will do better than ever. I think as much as he screams about Jeff Bezos and everyone else, he's very friendly to rich people and powerful people. And so I think he will do nothing if that's the case. On the sidelines, Steph about conservative voices, et cetera, et cetera, but in general.

  19. Wow, Carly and I have had a long history. We actually did an interview at All Things D that was very testy when she was the head of HP. But actually we had a tremendous podcast on this, really interesting about her run for senator for governor. No, governor of California, whatever. She was a senator, I think she was running for senator, and also her presidential run. And we had a really interesting talk about a lot of things. And she obviously has some experience in tech. And of course, now she's voting for Joe Biden, as you all saw the other day. If it's a Biden administration and its vice president, Elizabeth Warren, everybody at Silicon Valley better get their big boy pants on because they are going to be in big trouble. And that's, you know, as you know, Mark Zuckerberg said that Elizabeth Warren is an existential threat to Facebook. I was thinking climate change might be or many, many other things, racism, misogyny. I don't know, but he felt Elizabeth Warren was, which was really telling.

And I think this has been written about, but I remember vividly hearing about it, about people who worked there that were looking into people's profiles all the time. And it was troubling to me at the time, and they were sort of starting to clean it up. And so it happened directly. But I remember thinking, that bothers me, like that this, and I didn't do enough on it. I'll tell you that. It always stuck with me that there was that someone had the keys to open a vault of everybody's lives. And I think I felt that this was not a group of people that respected the responsibility of that as much as they should have. It stuck with me. And I'm actually going to be writing a book about Silicon Valley. I'm going to be writing about that. It was a little moment of, oh, you know, and they were like, oh, we've got it fixed. And I hopefully they will get the message and realize the damage that they've done, as you and I have written about and focus on the good things about these technologies, which are miraculous. And so I don't, for the short term no for the long term, every single empire dies. There's something very problematic at the heart of this company and eventually it will be what undoes them and it will be themselves. And so we'll see. I don't wish for it. I'm glad they're employing a lot of people. But I just think they could give in all their luck and all their money. They could do a whole lot better.

And a lot of the struggles she had doing it, she gave one of these speeches that resulted in a lawsuit and stuff like that. You know, I'm sorry to tell you, Carol, I think he's going to get out of it. I think as long as this company continues to perform as it does on Wall Street and he has complete control of it, I think I've written a column tomorrow that's appearing in the New York Times. It's pretty tough. But I think you can chip away at these things and you can bring them into line. And I think that's what's happening is they're realizing just the way cigarette companies or DuPont couldn't poison people by spilling, putting their toxic waste everywhere. Cars had to have seatbelts. I think we're going to have to just start to exert control via regulatory means fees, fines.

Not many, Stephanie, I'll be honest with you, I'm fantastic. I think that I thought Facebook wouldn't be as, I thought it was ridiculous the amount of money that was put into Facebook. And I also, same thing with eBay, although that's turned out to be a pretty horrible purple story in the end for them. I've been wrong about valuations quite a bit. Like, I can't believe people are paying this much for things that aren't worth that much. So I was wrong about Facebook's valuation and the worth it would be, but I'm not a stock picker, so I don't really care. And I think that's usually, usually, I think I'm pretty pressy about where things are going. I think it was very early to these problems that the internet was having. By making sure that our creators are diverse and can represent diverse perspectives, you and I just kicked off our conversation talking a little bit about that Ben Smith article and we certainly can do better there. 35. we need to be better across different pockets of the company certainly and we have real plans around how we can do that. It will take time but we're not letting that become an excuse. Second pillar is around career opportunity, career development where again we haven't been operating at the level that we need to. We've lost a lot of talented black employees, black writers in particular over the years and we need to become a place where our black employees have confidence that they can build their careers and grow and prosper. And that's going to take a lot of work, a lot of different types of work and we're committed to working on that. We started out, I've told this story previously, but we started out as a white male, predominantly white male team blogging and creating technology focused on sports. And as an early stage startup, you're thinking that my lesson learned is I was thinking about survival. I was thinking about growth. I was thinking about can we get to the next round to produce a product that people care about and keep jobs and grow? And then you get a few years into it and you look around and you realize this is not the company that we want. These are not the values. We're not upholding the values that we claim to care about. Now, if you're a terrible person like Shane Dawson and others, you're just trying to apologize for your shitty behavior over time. But I think everybody sort of has to talk about this idea. And one of the notes that you wrote on observing the Juneteenth holiday, which I thought was a really well done note, you said the positive actions we announced last week, including commemorating Juneteenth, are not in lieu of deeper structural change. We need to see at Vox Media. We will continue to thoughtfully accelerate our diversity, equity, inclusion work across the company. I will continue to communicate regularly with you and hold myself and our leadership accountable to this work. And so it's a real time for our brands to shine. And you see that in our numbers. And so we expect to as the crisis abates, we expect to emerge in a real position of strength, both by diversifying the business models and growing editorially and having more trust.

  41. On quality, you know, again, the bright. I talked about some of the business bright spots, but editorially, there's never been a stronger time for what we're doing. My first job in media was at CNN. I was an intern, a gopher, a production assistant just for a short period of time. I happened to be to age myself a little during the first Gulf War. And I saw CNN grow from a kind of not too well appreciated.

  42. Parts of our business are doing better, and I mentioned some of them, subscriptions, e-com podcasting, OTT, but our advertising business, which is still the majority of our business, took a big hit. We expected to come back, but we don't know when it will come back. And what is particularly hard is not so much the hit, because we know we'll bounce back from that, but what is hard is the visibility that we don't have into when things are coming back. And it makes it very hard to plan. And as such, it's a difficult exercise in cash management. It's a difficult exercise in communicating. Like everyone wants.

  43. Absolutely. It's a devastating time. It's always important to keep perspective. There is a global pandemic, a health crisis going on. That's the thing. And we as our company is rooted in editorial and journalism and we cover all of these topics. And so it's very close to home, but we also have people who work for us that, you know, we're experiencing the same issues that all companies are, keeping people safe, understanding what the future holds. And yes, because of the pandemic, there's a huge economic impact.

  44. For you and because they can be supported in ads, and when the economy is doing less well, there's a lot of talk about subscription. I think over time it comes to its own balance. But right now in podcasting, there's still a robust and growing ad market, and that's working well for us.

  45. The audience, but you'll have to consume them via the Spotify app and the Spotify ecosystem, which has implications for how they collect data, which has implications for how it's monetized, et cetera. And we, and most things we do support an open web view of things, including with podcasting, how it's monetized, you can be open and still monetized in different ways. I think right now we're in a place where kind of podcast subscriptions aren't making sense in part because there's so much amazing free to consumer ad supported content out there. There is a robust ad model. By the way, a lot of the conversation around ads versus subscription really has to do if you examine it, like how's the economy doing? And when the economy is doing well, people are like rushed to make things.

  46. Well, it's a great medium. I mean, if you zoom out one way of looking at what's happening is industries have been transformed, magazines have kind of been displaced by websites and platforms, TV broadcast is being displaced by OTT and radio talk radio and music radio is being displaced by, in the case of music by Spotify, Apple Music, et cetera. In the case of talk by podcasting. And right now podcasting is an open ecosystem, much like websites are. But there's a real threat that they can become more of a closed ecosystem. And I think even Spotify, with whom we partner and have a lot of respect for them, the podcast will be right now at least free to

  47. To be diverse across our business models, diverse across our properties and titles and diverse across the platforms on which we program, ranging from TV to magazines to podcasts to good old-fashioned websites.

  48. I do I think subscription is absolutely growing and you need to have something worth paying for and we do. But what I think for publishers like ours, modern publishers, is a multi-pronged business model. I didn't even get into podcasting even though we're on one now. Please. Podcasting is great. And podcasting is, we have the Vox Media Podcast Network, which is a large and growing part of our audience and our revenue. But what I'm getting at is diversification of like real business models, whether it's subscription, whether it's OTT, whether it's commerce and affiliate, whether it's advertising and different types of advertising, audio advertising, video advertising, Vox Creative. We were voted the number one creative studios for advertisers in the business by Digitay last year. And that's a thriving opportunity for us. Even when you talk about advertising, there's different kinds of advertising too. And we aim.

  49. I do think there's going to be more push into subscriptions. It's an interesting. I just interviewed the CEO of Neva, Sridhar Ramaswamy, who was a top Google executive. I'm sure you know him. I do. And he was like subscriptions. I can finally, he didn't think it was fixable, the model that Google and others are working at. You end up in the bad place all the time. And so he thought, if you start from scratch, you have to go with subscription. And he can now make good choices and render good search versus bad search.

  50. I completely agree. And listen, I'm not trying to be hypocritical. New York Mag is a paywall product, and we're proud of that. You're right, different models for different audiences. And that's what we're looking into.
