  1. Yeah, so this is the really crucial section of the interview where she's talking about solutions and she's talking about why, based on her experience working Content moderation that you can't have a one size fits all policy, easy set of checklist rules for every country around the world. So here's the clip.

  2. Yeah, exactly. All right, we're shifting gears. The third theme that I pulled out when I was looking through the back catalog is unconventional wisdom. This has been a sweet spot for Rico Decode. Really, you've been talking to people like Jason Freed, Trishana Zuboff, Scott Galloway, Maria Ressa, really powerful ideas to share. And they don't always have a built-in platform to share it when they come on the show. And the clip I've picked is one that you have referenced a lot in the past couple years. It's from, I believe, a 2018 interview you did with Nicole Wall.

  3. And I bothered him about it. I was like, what are you doing? And of course, it took them a year. And of course, they quarantined it and warned them. And so they sort of killed it off and they just happened to stick the knife in the dead body today.

  4. Yeah, just not exchange. Nothing's gotten better? No. I think a lot of the people are doing a lot of virtue signaling around it, but they don't, I don't think the numbers have budged. And you don't see people in real positions of power in different places. You have Susan Majiski running YouTube. You've got a bunch of different people. But overall, it's still a white dude world in Silicon Valley. And that's where a lot of the, as I've said, it's an unit, it creates unsafe products because the people there have never been unsafe a day in their lives.

  5. I just, the stuff she had to go through, and Erica was one of the first people talking about this out loud. And I think I really do appreciate her continued efforts. Another person like that is Ellen Powell, obviously, and some others really have spoken out early and often and continually about this and have been 100% right on everything they say and the negative repercussions of that.

  6. I don't know. There's asking if I'm security Asking if I'm the AA. Someone very high up at Google, I'm not going to say they're who they were, it would be a problem. But when I moved to Mountain View, I was an executive support tech. One of the people I supported walked in to my office that I shared with my white dude co worker, who's still one of my good friends, love him, and said, oh, is he here? And I was like, no, can I help you with something? Oh, can you just tell him blah, blah, blah? I was like, oh, I'm a support type too. I'm an exec tech too. Oh, I thought you were his admin. No, I'm not his admin. Can't believe it.

  7. Oh, yeah, it's interesting that people, when they're talking about diversity and inclusion, they say women and people of color. Yeah. Right. There's this whole section of us that overlaps that group. Yeah. There's a lot that I experienced while at Google. Just being made to feel different, you know. I remember being the one black woman on my floor and like people would walk by and stare.

  8. Being different and being unusual and having to like fight against People's expectations of women. You know, you have to prove that you're good at your job twice, three times just to get the same respect that a guy will get. It's lack of promotion. Lack of acknowledgement that you're a person, there's no empathy, really, right?

  9. So, what is the issue around retention? Because first, they talk about pipeline and STEM and girls not being interested, which I think is definitely clearly an issue. But what happens when they get there? What occurs? Is it just that you're the different, you're unusual, and therefore you're judged.

  10. About the problem of discrimination. And just for people who don't know, Erica worked at Google and she was the one that put salaries up. It started the thing of putting their salaries up to show the really discriminatory salary of there of the different salaries between women, people of color, and things like that. And then she went on to Slack and had similar issues. And she's always been one of the most outspoken people. And I think it's not been hard for her in terms of in the valley working and stuff. And I think she's great. She's amazing. And I did do this in 2015 because I really started to think something was really wrong here in how they staff these companies.

  11. Really amazing. You had her on the show a couple times. This was her first appearance in 2015. And I just found this story that she tells to be so much more powerful than merely reading about the problem of discrimination.

  12. The next clip I pulled out is I picked it because it came from the very early going, first couple months of Rika Decode way back in 2015. This is something, this is a theme that you have been really prioritizing from the beginning, and that's diversity initially in the tech industry and then in society at large. It's not something that historically a lot of tech journalists or even other tech podcasts have bothered to engage with.

  13. Yeah, they did. And he denied he would. That was the thing. He was so argumentative about, and he has been over the years about things. I'm always like, you're going to do it in four weeks or six weeks. And what was really interesting about that was I wanted to give a real insight into how he thinks, which honestly, I like Mark, but it's very lightweight from an intellectual point of view. And it's very lightweight from the responsibility he has given he is the sole arbiter of what happens on that platform, even though he doesn't want to be. But he is because he has so much control. That was a really big interview. Very big. I think Mark has had not very much success with interviews with me, although I think they're incredibly revealing. The last one he did before that, he's sweat, if you recall. And I'd like him to do a third, you know, third time's a charm, Mark. So come on up. Exactly. Come on. But it was a really important, that is an important interview to understand how he thinks, I think. And I think I do think he interviews I do with him are very revealing about him. I think even though he's

  14. It's an incredibly revealing quote because he's not saying it out of hate. He's clearly not someone who has really thought through, I think, all of the ramifications of leaving this stuff on the platform. And obviously he did ultimately take, Facebook did take down influence. Yeah, he did. He denied him.

  15. God, they don't mean to be, that was really shocking to me when he said that. And that's what took off. Everybody sort of were like he was defending all God's deniers in a way that was really odd. And I think, you know, fast forward to today where he's now starting to get the picture that he's got to start doing something about this stuff. But I think you get a real insight to him there. You know what I mean?

  16. I agree that it is false And I also think that going to someone who is a victim. Of Sandy Hook and telling them, hey, no, you're a liar That is harassment, and we actually will take that down. But overall, let's take this a little closer to home, right? So I'm Jewish, and there's a set of people who deny that the Holocaust have. I find that deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I don't believe that our platform should take that down because I think that there are things that different people get wrong. Either I don't think that they're intentionally getting wrong, but I think that It's hard to. Impun int In to understand the intent. But I just think for as important as some of those examples are, I think the reality is also that I get things wrong when I speak publicly.

  17. Has resulted. Yes. So we are moving towards the policy of misinformation that is aimed at or going to induce violence, we are going to take down because that's basically the principles that we have on what we remove from the service are if it's going to result in real harm, real physical harm, or if you're attacking individuals, then that content shouldn't be on the platform And there's a lot of categories of that that we can get into. But then there's broad debate.

  18. We would take it down. So in Myanmar or Sri Lanka, where there's a history of sectarian violence. Similar to the tradition in the US, where you can't go into a movie theater and yell fire because that creates an imminent harm. There are definite examples of people sharing images that are taken out of context, that are false, that are specifically used to induce people to violence in those areas where

  20. Yeah, I mean, at some level, it's hard to always have a clear line between, no, I'm not defending any specific content here. And I think a lot of the content that's at play is terrible. And I think when you get into discussions around free speech, you're often. Talking at the margins of content that is terrible and what should But defending people's right to say things, even if they can be bad. But Sorry, I lost my

And I think we were both sort of shocked by it and that he and his PR person seemed to not think it was important. Of course, it blew up in the news

  23. So the first theme that identified is powerful people saying controversial things and you probably know who I'm going to reference here. This is Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Summer of 2018 is when you did this big interview with him. And at the time, Facebook and its competitors still offered a big platform to Alex Jones and Infowars. It was being linked to the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. And you were really pushing him on Facebook's responsibility here around misinformation on all these issues, not to mention the 2016 election and more.

  24. This is 539 what we're recording right now. Very good round number to end on. So I went through dozens and dozens of shows over the past couple weeks looking for moments and really quickly figured out that I would have to cheat. We don't want to be doing this all day. So I picked out five moments that represent the best of Recode Decode. And by that I mean kind of five big themes of what the show does best.

  25. Well, we wanted to do something special for this episode, and I know that you hate looking backwards. I do. So we compromised a little bit. We're not going to spend the whole show looking backwards, but we do want to do a little bit of that. So I went through and dug up just a few of the best moments in Rico Decode's history. Without looking, do you know how many episodes of this show that you have done?

  26. Subscribed. One other thing you can still hear me twice a week every week on my other podcast, Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. We talk about tech and media and business. We make predictions and we frequently bring on special guests, some of whom you've heard on Recoat Decode. It's a lot of fun. It's a little crazy. And if somehow you haven't listened to Pivot yet, now is the perfect time to start. Okay, enough housekeeping. I'm going to bring on my longtime producer Eric Johnson, who has been critical to making this podcast a success. He gets to be behind the scenes, but he's just as important, if not more important, than I am. Now to explain what we're doing on today's show. Hey, Eric.

  27. Hi, I'm Kara Swisher, editor at large of Recode. You may know me as one of the voices in your head, but I'm the only one you should be listening to. But in my spare time, I'm just a reporter, and you're listening to Rico Decode, a podcast about power change, and the people you need to know who are part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. Actually, I will not be in the voice in your head any longer, at least at Ricodita Code. This is my final episode after more than five years. So on today's show, I'm wrapping everything up. I'm going to tell you whether Adnad Syed was guilty, what happened to Tony Soprano, who raised parents really were, and whether Joe actually married Friedrich. That's a no everything else I have no idea. Rico decode interviews every Monday and Wednesday. Box Media and New York Magazine will bring you new interviews on this feed later this year, so please stay
