Über Jahre hatte der Täter Terabytes von kinderpornografischem Material kommerziell verbreitet und machte dabei insbesondere seine eigene Tochter zum Hauptopfer. Was bremste die Aufklärung? Der deutsche Föderalismus, aber auch die Zersplitterung der Zuständigkeiten zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union im digitalen Raum. Deshalb sage ich, ja, europäische Harmonisierung von Kinderschutz bedeutet eine Übertragung von Zuständigkeiten, aber eben eine, die Leben schützt, die dafür sorgt, dass Täter nicht mehr durch die Lücken im föderalen und nationalstaatlichen Dickicht entkommen können und dass der Schutz von Kindern nicht mehr an der Staatsgrenze aufhört.”

“Madam President, I am basing my point of order – as so often before – on Rule 10(4) of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament prohibiting hate speech. In this debate, in the speeches of our colleagues Susanna Ceccardi, Mary Khan or even Zsuzsanna Borvendég, we have seen rhetoric that automatically puts the mere existence or the knowledge of people of the LGBTQ+ community as a danger to children. We can, of course, have a debate about the point in the life of a child where it should get knowledge about sexuality, but phrasing the mere existence of a group as a danger to children – this is hate speech. Madam Vice-President, we have seen this in this Parliament over and over again, and I think there was a reason why Rule 10(4) explicitly mentions hate speech.”

“This was actually one of my number one priorities. In the five minutes at the beginning, I unfortunately wasn't able to present the full package of Choose Europe for Science, but I can reassure you that we are working on everything that you mentioned, like improving career development, improving conditions for scientists in Europe, visa facilitation – we worked with Commissioner Brunner and with the Member States on that – and all the other questions that were raised and proposals that I heard today. I want to share with you one concrete number: now, with only 5 % of the world's population, Europe is already home to one fourth of scientists in the world. “Madam President, dear people of Europe, cohesion is not charity. It is a political promise that no region, no person is left behind. This report reminds us that the gaps between European regions are still real in innovation, in jobs, in future prospects, and that's not acceptable. We need a cohesion policy that matches the challenges of our time, green transition, digital transition and demographic change. That means simpler access to EU funds, stronger roles for local and regional actors, and long-term thinking, not just emergency response. Because when we invest in cohesion, we don't just invest in roads or statistics. We invest in dignity, in democracy and in equal chances all across Europe.”

“Frau Präsidentin, liebe Menschen Europas, verehrter Herr Kommissar! Ich danke Ihnen und den ganzen Kollegen hier für die wichtige Arbeit. Ich möchte zum Abschluss noch einmal das Licht auf zwei Aspekte werfen, die auch angesprochen wurden: Das eine ist die Aufklärung, und das andere ist auch die psychologische Betreuung, die im Umfeld von Krankheiten relevant werden kann. Wir haben da gerade ein leuchtendes Beispiel gesehen bei der Rede des Kollegen Mazurek, der offensichtlich aufgrund mangelnder Aufklärung nicht den Mut hatte, eine wichtige Impfung vorzunehmen, und aufgrund dessen dann gezwungen war, über eine lange Zeit zu Hause zu bleiben, dem sozialen Leben entrissen war und bis heute sichtbar schwere Nachwirkungen davonträgt.”

“Pour résumer, voilà, en quelque sorte, notre nouvel équilibre, qu'il faut que nous puissions trouver entre nous, collectivement: à la fois l'approfondissement du marché intérieur, la protection des frontières extérieures par rapport au e-commerce, pour protéger notre marché, et la diversification des accords commerciaux, alors que le commerce devient de plus en plus compliqué et que la guerre tarifaire et la guerre douanière entre la Chine et les États-Unis peuvent avoir un impact important sur notre économie, en contrepartie d'une préférence européenne sur un certain nombre d'achats publics. “Je consacrerai beaucoup de capital politique à ce que la réforme des douanes puisse progresser au même rythme que notre réforme et notre stratégie sur le marché intérieur. D'un côté, libéralisation et rupture des barrières restantes sur le marché intérieur, de l'autre, protection des frontières européennes en ce qui concerne l'e-commerce, notamment en avançant sur la question du contrôle. Je pense que c'est le bon équilibre qu'il faut pouvoir trouver collectivement dans cette maison. “The recent and suspicious death of prominent Tibetan Buddhist leader Tulku Hungkar Dorje in Vietnam is another source of concern on which further clarity should be sought through an independent investigation. Against this background, the EU will continue to reiterate the rights of individuals or religious communities to conduct their basic affairs and freely choose their religious leaders without government interference, whether in Tibet or elsewhere in the world. “Buddhist monks are held captive as political detainees or sentenced to re-education or prison. There are reports about the demolition of Buddhist monasteries, the implementation of regulations by the government of China are affecting and interfering with Tibetan Buddhism, including the succession and recognition of Lamas and living Buddhas continues. We continue to urge the Chinese Government not to interfere in succession processes, including in the succession process of the Dalai Lama. Soon, on 17 May, we will mark the sad 30th anniversary of the enforced disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual figure in Tibetan Buddhism, whose whereabouts are unknown.”

You got the circle at the end a little bit better, but freedom of religion is not a Western idea. Freedom of religion is not something there are multiple opinions about, that you have to have a dialogue about. The oldest proof of religion is 100 000 years old. Even before humans were humans in the modern sense, they believed in something. They had religious practices. “And again, a number of colleagues raised the issue of the protection of minors online. That is a multifaceted issue. But certainly in the context of the Digital Fairness Act – which I will have responsibility to bring forward – the protection of minors will be very carefully considered, and there will be measures within the DFA that seek to strengthen the protection of children online as part of that legislation. Strengthening citizens' rights in the online information environment is also an aspect we are reflecting on as part of the forthcoming Democracy Shield. I recognise the work of the committee of this House on the European Democracy Shield, under the leadership of Nathalie Loiseau. I would remind colleagues that the public consultation window is open until 26 May.”
“We will do so objectively, independently, led by the facts and the evidence, and fully in line with the procedures laid down in the law. I think it's important that we also state categorically that, far from undermining freedom of expression, the Digital Services Act protects freedom of expression. And one such example is the requirement to have transparency about the content moderation provisions that the platforms have, so that if your content is taken down, you have a right to understand the reasons why. That the policy around content moderation is clear is just one example of how freedom of expression is protected by the DSA. Looking ahead, the Digital Fairness Act will carefully fill existing gaps to address problematic online practices that can be found on social media.”
